Frequently Asked

What do NIJ protection levels mean?

The U.S. National Institute of Justice publishes performance standards that test armor against specific threats — soft-armor levels for common handgun rounds and hard-plate levels for rifle threats. A rating certifies performance against the tested threats only; it is not a guarantee against everything.

Does body armor expire?

Manufacturers typically state a service life — often around five years for soft armor — because fibers degrade with wear, moisture, heat, and UV exposure. The materials don't vanish at the date, but warrantied performance does. Inspect regularly and follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Is it legal to own body armor?

In many places civilian ownership is legal, but restrictions exist — some jurisdictions bar ownership by convicted felons, restrict purchase methods, or add penalties for wearing armor during crimes. Laws vary widely and change; this site provides general information only, so confirm the current rules where you live.
